British Columbia, Canada

HOT news for the 2012 season. Go to the "Tip" section and get more then ever before

We meet at the office of BRC right at the base of Red Mountain at 8am. After signing your life away (standard waiver whenever you go CAT or Heli) we drove about half an hour to the base of the CAT operation.

Big Red Cats have been operating their business for the last 6 seasons and offer a wide range of packages. Single day, multiple days, weekly, incl. accommodation, last minute etc.. 8 different mountains, modern CAT’s, 3 different levels to choose from (Intermediate, Advanced and Expert). Standard group size is about 12 but some CAT’s can fit up to 14 plus 2 guides. Nobody has to go last and make sure that the whole group is going the right way which is great. A tail guide will take care of this; this is what I noticed right way and this was also one thing I could not stand when doing Heliskiing several years ago. When I pay 1000 dollars a day to go heli I don’t wonna go last not even once a day and stop all the time to make sure everybody is ok.

A safety briefing as well as short practical transceiver training at the base is followed by a 45min ride to the top of the first mountain. First run did not quite provide the best snow and therefore our guides decided to change to another area to get some better snow. From then on we got boot to knee deep powder for the rest of the day. Memories of how my trip started in Japan in January came back with a big smile on all the faces. “Life is good again”

The time you spend in the CAT is perfect to get you ready for the next run. Sandwiches and cookies as well as water is provided by BRC.

If you have your own backcountry equipment you are welcome to bring it along and there is plenty of space in the CAT. In fact this is one of the most comfortable ones I have ever seen. There are bad memories of small uncomfortable and totally wrong seat positions from the past but this was many years ago at the different location/company.

After about 8 to 10 runs the day is over and by 5pm you are back at the base of Red Mountain. Thanks very much BRC for a great day. Lars and I enjoyed it a lot.

Next time you need a powder fix make sure to check the offers of BRC.

Accomodation

The Red Shutter Inn belongs to the same company and provided a fantastic skiers lodge. Most guests are also going for cat skiing or even book one of many packages which include cat and accommodation. There are plenty of other places to stay no matter what you budget is.

Small Group Catskiing is now available at BRC.  We still will have their standard cats running groups of 12 but now will offer a cat that will take two smaller groups of 5-7 skiers at a time. Yes, the cat ride up will still be full, but once on the slope you will be skiing terrain in your own small group with your own guides. You will then meet up at a pre-arranged location and do it all over again.

So why small groups? Well, according to Kieren Gaul of Big Red Cats, expert guests will get to experience different terrain such as narrow chutes and drops with more personal attention from their guides. “Having smaller groups of expert skiers in the cats will allow small groups to move through the terrain more quickly” says Kieren. That means more vertical and more powder in a day than a larger group.

Who is this for? As mentioned above, this program is intended for expert skiers looking to ski harder, faster and search out more challenging terrain. According to Kieren, “The idea behind this is to offer our guests a more intimate experience. It is also great if you have 5 friends that are really close in ability and want to try some really cool lines.”

If this is making your ski legs tingle a day of small group catskiing can be yours for $425/person/day in the low season and $475/person/day in the high season.

For more details, contact Kieren or Paula at Big Red Cats today.
