There are several ways to get to Kagura. One tram (they call it ropeway here in Japan) from Mitsumata to the Kagura area or a tram somewhere between Kagura and Naeba bringing you to the Tashiro area which is part of the mountain and included in the ticket. The third way is the so called "Dragondola" a 5481m long gondola connecting Naeba and Tashiro Area and from there by chairs to Kagura.

Kagura as well as Tashiro are a big area which is perfect for beginner and intermediate skiers and boarders. There are some steeper runs for advanced skiers but overall rather flat. Advanced and expert skiers can ski some tree areas as well as go for backcountry. There are "keep out" signs and ropes but according to some locals the ski patrol is taking it very easy about going into these areas anyway.

The very top chair of Kagura is only open from the end of February until the end of the season. I don't know why as this chair would give access to some nice short tree runs as well give much easier access to the backcountry. We hiked up there and got some very nice powder turns.

Kagura offers a very long ski season starting in November and ending in late May.

Tip

If you like to make your Kagura experience even better you might consider to stay on the mountain for a night. At Kagura there is a Mountain Hut called Wadogoya. For a very reasonable rate you can stay at this lodge (sleeps up to 40) and enjoy first tracks in the morning. Dinner and breakfast are included. For sure not the most luxury accommodation but well worth it. Take a notebook, a book, an MP3 player to keep yourself busy.
